First Graduates of EFZ – a federally recognized diploma for Professional Dance at BTB.
On Friday, June 24th the BTB 2016 graduates received their diplomas in a ceremony at the Basel Theater. Ten of the 15 graduates were the first BTB students to receive the federally recognized diploma in professional dance. (EFZ – eidgenössischem Fähigkeitszeugnis – Bühnentanz) The students, representing 6 nationalities, all successfully completed their studies in classical and modern dance and were congratulated by Richard Wherlock, Director of Ballett Basel.As part of the Graduation Ceremony, 2 choreographies which were made for BTB were presented by students of the school.

The EFZ DiplomaYoung dancers are offered the opportunity to complete their academic education and simultaneously receive an education in classical and modern dance of the highest level. Academic courses are conducted bilingually in German and English, allowing students from all over Switzerland and the world to maximize the benefits of their studies.The EFZ Diploma not only prepares young dancers for their professional careers, it additionally opens the doors to instutitions of higher education in Switzerland and abroad.

Graduation Ceremony 2016 – Choreographies from BTB Graduate, Pauline Richard, and BTB modern teacher, Selatin Kara.

During the 2016 Graduation Ceremony, 2 choreographies created for BTB students were presented. The first was choreographed by Selatin Kara, BTB modern teacher, and was danced by Pedro Maricato and Francisco Patricio. The 2nd piece, „All You need is Love“, choreographed by BTB graduate, Pauline Richard and set to the music of Beatles, was preformed by a cast of 7 students. Both pieces were received with well deserved applause.

Ballettschule Theater Basel – 15 Year Anniversary CelebrationOn May 21, 2016, BTB celebrated it’s 15 Year Anniversary with a performance in the Basel Theater. Students from the Junior and Senior Schools presented a program which included work specially choreographed for the occasion, the first Movement of „Serenade“ from George Balanchine and „Bolero“ from Richard Wherlock. Seit der Gründung 2001 besteht eine enge Verbindung zum Ballett Basel und dessen Direktor Richard Wherlock. Diese Partnerschaft ermöglicht den Schülerinnen und Schülern eine besondere Nähe zur Praxis und intensive Einblicke in den professionellen Alltag einer renommierten Tanzkompanie.

Heinz Spoerli Foundation awards Prize to Amanda Bennett

For her outstanding achievement as Director of the Ballettschule Theater Basel, Amanda Bennett received the Foundation Heinz Spoerli Prize. The Prize is endowed with 20,000 Swiss Francs."Amanda Bennett has developed the Ballettschule Theater Basel into an internationally recognized school for classical ballet. This outstanding achievement deserves public recognition,“ said the choreographer and former Zürich Ballet Director Heinz Spoerli. The Foundation Heinz Spoerli was founded 14 years ago and the Prize is being awarded for the fifth time. With this Prize the Foundation wishes to make a contribution to the preservation of the art form of dance as well as the promotion of the public interest in dance.

The native Texan, Amanda Bennett, has spent the majority of her career in Switzerland. After training at the School of American Ballet in New York, she began her first engagement with the Ballet du Grand Théatre de Genève. She preformed to great aclaim for 11 years as Principal dancer with the Basler Ballett under the direction of Heinz Spoerli. Amanda Bennett has directed the Ballettschule Theater Basel since 2001. Through her success, the school is now internationally recognized as an important center for the training of classical ballet and draws students from all over the world. In 2012 Amanda Bennett was named Artistic Director of the Prix de Lausanne.The prize giving ceremony took place in the Basel Theater on the 14th of June 2015 at the end of the Ballettschule Summer Gala.

2015 Migro Kulturprozent Scholarship for Dance.

Congratulations to Marie Couturier, Pauline Richard and Valentina Voci.All three are recipients of the 2015 Migro Kulturprozent Scholarship for Dance.The scholarship is endowed with 14,400.- CHF. Marie and Valentina receive the scholarship for the second time and Pauline for the first time. We are very pleased that3 of the 6 scholarships went to students of BTB.

Prix de Lausanne

We are delighted to announce that the “Ballettschule Theater Basel” has been named an official "Partner School“ of the Prix de Lausanne. We are honored to be a part of the Prix de Lausanne community and are looking forward to all the new possibilities this will open to us.

World Expo Milano

BTB has been invited to perform at the Swiss Pavillion of the World Expo in Milano. Performances will take place on the 22 & 23. May 2015. Choreography: Armando Braswell – Ballett Basel.

Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York

Congratulations to Alicia Gouveia and Guido SarnataroAfter successfully competing at the Youth America Grand Prix Semi Finals in Paris, BTB Students Alicia Gouveia and Guido Sarnataro have been invited to participate in the YAGP finals in New York from the 10. – 16. April 2015. Youth America Grand Prix is the largest competition for young dancers.

Migros Kulturprozent

June 2014

Three of the six 2014 Migros Kulturprozent scholarships for dance (Studienpreis Tanz des Migros Kulturprozent) have been awarded to BTB students. Each prize winner is awarded the sum 14,400.- CHF to put toward their dance education. We congratulate Marie Couturier, Julie Diethelm and Valentina Voci.

Students perform with Ballet du Rhin

Four BTB students (Molly Gardiner, Anni Jokimies, Dayne Florence und Gianluca Perrulli) will have the opportunity by means of a short apprenticeship to experience the daily environment of a professional dance company. The students will take part in the rehearsals and the performance of PINOCCHIO by Ivan Cavallari and SCHÖPFUNG by Uwe Scholz at the Opera National du Rhin in Mulhouse and Strasbourg. We are delighted to be able to offer them this opportunity.

Swiss Diploma in Professional Dance

Since August 2013 BTB offers a fully integrated academic program along with their professional training for classical dance. Students graduating from the academic program will graduate with the official Swiss Federally recognised Diploma “EFZ”. This is a wonderful opportunity for our new students to obtain a professional education in dance as well as an official Diploma which enables them to further their higher education.

We began with 16 students and are looking forward to the exiting new opportunities this opens to us..

On February, 17. 2013, students of the Ballettschule Theater Basel will preform at the 10 year Anniversary Gala of the Tanz Olymp in Berlin. Keren Lieman and Valentin Quitman will preform a pas de deux from Duncan Rownes’ “Reframed”, which was choreographed for Tanz Luzerner Theater. Molly Gardiner and Dayne Florence will present “Czerny pas de deux”, choreography: Rafael Avnikjan.

Theaterklasse Students

Molly Gardiner, Keren Leiman, Dayne Florence and Gianluca Perrulli have been invited by Ivan Cavalleri, the new Artistic Director of Ballet du Rhin, to appear with the company in Heinz Spoerli’s production of Goldberg Variations. The premiere will take place on October 12th at the Filliture in Mulhouse. Subsequent Performances will take place in Mulhouse, Colmar and Strousbourg.

EFZ Diploma

EFZ, Diploma for Professional Dance in Basel

Beginning in August 2013 The BTB will offer a Federal Diploma in Dance. The Ballettschule Theater Basel has been granted permission by the federal  and local government to offer a Federally recognized diploma in dance. The curriculum of the 3 year course includes classes in classical ballet, modern dance, character dance, dance history, music theory and history, anatomy and nutrition as well as general academic classes in English, German, math etc and is recognized throughout Switzerland.
Requirements for acceptance to the course:  A physical suitability for classical ballet. A solid knowledge of the basics of classical ballet technique and modern dance.  Completition of the 9th year of school.

Boarding House

Our Boarding House is open!!!

On August 12, the BTB christened our boarding house for students aged 12 – 16. The boarding house is perfectly situated half way between the Theater Basel and the Gymnasium and WBS Bäumlihof. The housing facility provides 24 hour a day supervision for our younger students. Nutritious and delicious meals, are prepared by our house mother who also insures that the students have their needs, in a family environment, looked after.

Migros Scholarship

August, 2012

In July two students of the BTB were awarded the prestigious Migro Scholarship for Dance: Salome Füger and Sidney Turtschi. Sidney received the scholarship for the 2nd year in a row.
